After a massive search and selection process, UNSW Founders has announced the seven teams selected to participate in this year’s flagship UNSW Founders 10x Accelerator program.

The teams of the 2020 cohort represent a range of ideas including a mobile docketing system that replaces the need for paper receipts, image software designed to reduce online fashion returns and software that gives robots a human sense of touch.

Launched in 2018, the 10x Accelerator program has been designed to support high potential startups founded by UNSW students, staff or alumni. A record number of 75 UNSW startups applied this year making it the most competitive application process yet. David Burt, Director of Entrepreneurship said a higher proportion UNSW alumni teams this year, signalled that “many people in career transitions are starting new companies rather than seeking another corporate job”.

Due to physical distancing requirements, this year’s 10x Accelerator will be delivered 100% online, providing increased accessibility to startups based across the country.

The 10x Accelerator has already produced some extraordinary companies, such as Yellowbox. The prize-winning tech startup Yellowbox has recently partnered with Randwick City Council to deliver free contactless smart lockers at local beaches.

Yellowbox founders and Business School alumni Vanessa Zhao, Ho Jun Tang, Ben Delaney and Adrian Brossard used their degrees and assistance from the UNSW Founders program to help set up the tech company which specialises in short-term self-storage using Bluetooth technology.

“We know from research conducted in both Australia and overseas that the overwhelming majority of new jobs are created by companies less than five years old. It’s data like this that proves if we want rapid job creation in Australia, we need to support the people who are stepping up to start and lead new companies,” Burt said.

UNSW Founders 10x Accelerator program kicks off mid-August and culminates early November with a Demo Night providing attendees insight into these startups as they seek further investment and to scale their operations. The Founders team welcomes all fellow entrepreneurs, investors, mentors and friends to come along and show their support.
